Psychological Safety (PS) is crucial as it empowers employees to contribute to the team’s success. It makes employees feel safe and willing to engage in Positive Behaviors, which are vital for team performance and company success. These Behaviors include Knowledge Sharing, Mistake Reporting, Expressing Disagreement, Giving Feedback, Authentic Self-expression, and Making Decisions.

A member’s feelings of Psychological Safety are determined by their expectations of teammates’ reactions when they engage in different Behaviors. If employees expect negative consequences (e.g., anger, blame, judgment, embarrassment, exclusion, punishment), they will feel afraid and avoid engaging in the 6 subcategories of Psychological Safety. If they expect positive consequences (e.g., respect, appreciation, valuing their contributions), they will feel comfortable and actively engage in the behaviors that create high Psychological Safety.

With in-depth explanations of the 6 behaviors, and team exercises, the goal of this workbook is to help members to form new, positive Expectations about how their teammates will respond to their Behaviors that create Psychological Safety.
